This annual event for Scouts in the District was recently hosted by 1st Boroughbridge Group at the Coronation Hall, Milby, Boroughbridge,
A massive 18 Patrols (Teams), each of between 4 and 6 Scouts, from Ripon, Boroughbridge, Sowerby, Topcliffe, Masham and Thirsk came together for just over 2 hours of FUN and FRIENDSHIP whilst tackling 12 challenging tasks each out of the 18 bases provided for them to do.
The 18 Bases included: Marshmallow and Pasta Pioneering, Knotting, Mastermind, Jamboree locations, Union Jack jigsaw, 'Get out of that', Map symbol memory, First Aid scenario, Mountain height recognition, Scouting snakes and ladders, Estimating weight, Kim's game, Skittles, Meccano Pioneering and Chief Scouts recognition
After the tasks were completed, the scores were added together and there were only 6 points between the FIRST PLACE and the THIRD PLACE
The top three Patrols (Teams) were deemed to be, in reverse order - 3rd 'Team O' (from 6th Ripon) with 81 points - 2nd 'Team I' (from 6th Ripon) with 83 points - and 1st (the WINNERS) were 'Team E' (from 1st Masham) with 87 points.
1st Masham therefore took home the 'Jim Bradford' Trophy' to proudly hold for 12 months until next year's competition.
Well done to ALL who participated - and thanks to ALL those who made it happen.
Sunday, 8th October saw the largest entry list for the North Yorkshire Scouts’ Annual Camp Cooking Competition so far. 28 teams from North Yorkshire Scout Groups registered and although there were inevitably some cancellations it still ended up with around 70 youngsters taking part in the 2017 County Cooking Competition at Easingwold Outdoor Centre (Dawney Bridge).
As in previous years each team of three were required to produce a meal for four (main meal and either starter or dessert) that they might serve at a Scout Camp. This was using a maximum of 2 rings or burners, no grills or any other aids that they might not have when camping - and all in two hours.
With the help of the long-standing cooking experience of one of their number, the three judges, Mark Edwards, Keith Cartwright and Felicity Hackett, all members of the County Scouting HQ Staff, managed to agree on the winners. Even then it was only by applying culinary and presentational standards that would more usually have been seen in a ‘Master Chef’ competition - and still it wasn’t without a certain amount of argument!
However, the job was done and the final result was:
1st. - 1st Topcliffe Scout Group team: “Topcafe” with Pan Fried Salmon and parsley sauce with new potatoes, mange touts and baby carrots with Tiramisu for desert.
2nd - Hillside Scout Group, team: “Hillside Girls” with Pan fried Chicken with a Creamy Paprika Sauce and a Toffee Crumble and Home Made Custard for desert.
3rd - 1st Great Ayton Scout Group (Leven District), team: “Resolution”. They produced a Risotto and Bruschetta main course with Chocolate fudge brownie for desert.
Congratulations to Ripon and District: Not only did our 1st Topcliffe Group achieve a FIRST for the second year running but our Hillside Group also managed to get SECOND place!
Joe Hart who is the Explorer Scout Leader for the Black Stallion Explorer Unit in the District has been appointed as the NEW Assistant County Commissioner (Digital). Joe is the first person to hold this post in the County of North Yorkshire and we all wish him well in it.
This is what our County Commissioner, Mark Edwards, says about this appointment:"The professional skills and advice that Joe can bring to this new appointment will help us to improve the delivery of many aspects of Scouting across the County. As we embrace new and innovative means of communication to improve Scouting business, Joe will be an invaluable asset to the County Team and I know that he will have your full support".
1st THIRSK SCOUT GROUP still needs more volunteer Adults or Young Leaders.
There are plenty of Beavers, Cubs and Scouts but it is more ADULTS that are needed in ALL sections, but especially in the Cub Section at this time.
Cubs meet on Tuesdays at the Picks Lane Scout HQ from 6.30pm until 8pm.
ANY help from anyone would be good - If you can't spare regular time, there are always jobs to be done as occasional 'help' in Administration, Hall Maintenance etc.

IZZY WIZZY LET'S GET QUIZZY!
The DISTRICT KNOCKOUT ROUND of the COUNTY CUB SCOUT QUIZ was held on 6th October at Allhallowgate Church Hall.
Here are the results of this District Round - The District Commissioner says: "They all did really well, only one point between the top two and the rest all being only a point or so behind each other - a really close result. We had fun and some of the answers were hilarious",

Now, following this District Knockout Round, the COUNTY FINAL of the Quiz will be held on 19th November at Thirsk Town Hall between 12 Noon and 4pm.

On a recent Saturday morning in September, the Scout Association’s Annual General Meeting took place. This year, there was no shortage of reasons to celebrate. The movement has excelled in all four areas of the strategy. Successes include:
12 consecutive years of growth
230,000 young people are involved in A Million Hands – that’s 7,200 sections from 4,400 Groups, delivering 500 projects
A 6.5% increase in adult volunteers
A 6% growth of female youth members, taking us to 100,000 girls in Scouts for the first time
11% more young leaders
178 new sections in areas of deprivation
139 Youth Commissioners appointed around the country

The Scout Association's 'good practice' advice has been updated
This sound advice has been updated to better reflect POR rule 2.4d which has NOT changed. This states that "Adults must not consume alcohol when they are directly responsible for young people on a Scouting activity and must not permit young people (aged under 18 years) to consume alcohol on Scouting activities."
Following its successful introduction by 'Scouts Scotland', a pocket sized GREEN CARD has been produced for the rest of the United Kingdom and a card was included in every copy of the Autumn Edition of "Scouting" Magazine.
This card sets out our policy on alcohol for all adults involved in Scouting.
